Oriental medicine (OM), also known as Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a healing art that existed in some form or other for more than 3,000 years. Some of the earlier texts date back from the Han Dynasty (206 BCE to 220 ACE). In the western world, it is commonly known as acupuncture. However, acupuncture is only one of several modalities that physicians of TCM use to treat patients. TCM emphasizes the role of the body in the healing process and uses herbs and natural agents to maintain health. It is an effective form of treatment and a particularly safe form of therapy. TCM is a complete medical system that takes into account every aspect of human life to promote health and well-being. It sees the body as one whole entity like a “Garden” and encompasses its physical, emotional, energetic, as well as its spiritual aspects. It emphasizes on the “Vis medicatrix” the “healing power of nature” better known as “the inborn ability of the human body to respond to the insult of illness or injury and restore itself to health in most episodes of disease or trauma (Whorton, 2002, p. 6).” The goal for treatment is boosting the ecological condition to favor self-regulatory capacity. Physicians in the eastern world are trained to examine skin, complexion, bones, channels, smells, sounds, mental state, preferences, emotions, tongue, pulse, demeanor, and body build to discern patterns that underlie a patient’s complaints. TCM’s wholistic approach to healing addresses the underlying cause of disease, and allows the body to heal itself naturally. Physicians are taught to treat the cause not just the symptoms of an illness so that the body can function more efficiently and therefore ensuring true health.

Sprain and Strain Injuries - Prevention is the best Medicine
A sprain is an injury to a ligament - the thin pieces of avascular connective tissue that connect a bone to a bone. A strain is an injury to a muscle - tearing of the fibers within the muscle itself. Sprains and strains often occur at the same time, both tissues being damaged in the same injury. They are very common, especially in active individuals. However, they can also occur on a daily basis by activities such as improper lifting technique or twisting an ankle. Virtually all professional sports teams employ a chiropractic physician that attends sporting events and assesses the athletes for condtions like these. He/she will also often perform chiropractic adjustments to restore proper joint motion and improve therefore the athlete's performance. There are a number of precautions that can be taken to help you avoid these injuries. Here are a few things you can do to protect yourself:

1. If you are an active individual, be sure that you warm up and cool down properly before engaging in heavy physical activity. Working out hard with muscles that have not been warmed up properly is very dangerous and a number of injuries can be prevented by taking just a few minutes before each workout to warm up the muscle. This can be done by dynamic stretching, a few minutes of slow jogging, or other low intensity activity proir to the more intense workout.

2. Regular chiropractic care is a great way to keep joints healthy and moving properly. There is a reason why virtually all major athletes receive regular chiropractic care. By allowing for improved range of motion, the body is able to move and function the way it was designed to, decreaseing the risk for injury.

3. Stay hydrated! Especially in Florida, staying properly hydrated is an absolute must! If you plan to spend more than a few minutes performing moderate to high intensity physical activity, be sure to choose a beverage that has some electrolytes in it to rehydrate with! We lose a lot of sodium and potassium through our skin when we sweat and replenishing these nutrients is essential for proper muscle function. If we lose too many and don't replenish them, we may end up with muscle cramping which can increase the chances of injury.
