Oriental medicine (OM), also known as Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a healing art that existed in some form or other for more than 3,000 years. Some of the earlier texts date back from the Han Dynasty (206 BCE to 220 ACE). In the western world, it is commonly known as acupuncture. However, acupuncture is only one of several modalities that physicians of TCM use to treat patients. TCM emphasizes the role of the body in the healing process and uses herbs and natural agents to maintain health. It is an effective form of treatment and a particularly safe form of therapy. TCM is a complete medical system that takes into account every aspect of human life to promote health and well-being. It sees the body as one whole entity like a “Garden” and encompasses its physical, emotional, energetic, as well as its spiritual aspects. It emphasizes on the “Vis medicatrix” the “healing power of nature” better known as “the inborn ability of the human body to respond to the insult of illness or injury and restore itself to health in most episodes of disease or trauma (Whorton, 2002, p. 6).” The goal for treatment is boosting the ecological condition to favor self-regulatory capacity. Physicians in the eastern world are trained to examine skin, complexion, bones, channels, smells, sounds, mental state, preferences, emotions, tongue, pulse, demeanor, and body build to discern patterns that underlie a patient’s complaints. TCM’s wholistic approach to healing addresses the underlying cause of disease, and allows the body to heal itself naturally. Physicians are taught to treat the cause not just the symptoms of an illness so that the body can function more efficiently and therefore ensuring true health.

Chiropractic care is a natural treatment approach that uses resources naturally available in our environment to treat injuries and symptoms in the body. Eating a diet that consists of proper nutrition is a natural complement to chiropractic treatment. In order to heal injuries or prevent the onset of certain diseases, your body needs certain vitamins and nutrients. Below are just a few examples of how and why it is crucial to place emphasis on a proper diet when looking to heal as quickly as possible and prevent the pain from coming back. Be sure to talk to your doctor before making changes to your diet however, as some of these general recommendations may not be right for you.

1. Your body has different nutritional needs in times of sickness. When you're sick (like the flu or a cold) or injured (such as a cut or a torn muscle) your body needs and uses about twice as much protein as you normally do! Why is that? Well, remember that pretty much all of the resources your body needs to make more cells (heal tissue) come from your diet. A large part of who and what you are is protein, so in order to make more cells, as is the case in times of tissue damage, your body needs more protein. Similarly, a large part of your immune system is made up of protein so if you want to effectively fight off a cold, you need protein so your body can make more immune cells. That's why your chiropractor may recommend that you consume some extra protein when you're sick or going through the healing process.

2. Research shows that certain supplements can speed up the healing process. It has long been said that taking Vitamin C can help keep you from getting sick. Well, as it turns out, the research actually says that this is not true! But don't worry, there's still good news. There is evidence that taking Vitamin D when you have a cold or other respiratory infection can decrease the amount of time you are sick by about a day. Not a bad deal if you ask me!

3. Research has shown that people who eat healthy tend to feel less pain. A healthy diet can decrease systemic inflammation, decreasing tissue damage and causing you to feel less pain than someone who consistently eats an unhealthy diet. Eating a lot of sugar and simple carbohydrates, and few nutrients like vitamins, protein and fiber, can also make it more difficult for tissues to heal.
