Oriental medicine (OM), also known as Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a healing art that existed in some form or other for more than 3,000 years. Some of the earlier texts date back from the Han Dynasty (206 BCE to 220 ACE). In the western world, it is commonly known as acupuncture. However, acupuncture is only one of several modalities that physicians of TCM use to treat patients. TCM emphasizes the role of the body in the healing process and uses herbs and natural agents to maintain health. It is an effective form of treatment and a particularly safe form of therapy. TCM is a complete medical system that takes into account every aspect of human life to promote health and well-being. It sees the body as one whole entity like a “Garden” and encompasses its physical, emotional, energetic, as well as its spiritual aspects. It emphasizes on the “Vis medicatrix” the “healing power of nature” better known as “the inborn ability of the human body to respond to the insult of illness or injury and restore itself to health in most episodes of disease or trauma (Whorton, 2002, p. 6).” The goal for treatment is boosting the ecological condition to favor self-regulatory capacity. Physicians in the eastern world are trained to examine skin, complexion, bones, channels, smells, sounds, mental state, preferences, emotions, tongue, pulse, demeanor, and body build to discern patterns that underlie a patient’s complaints. TCM’s wholistic approach to healing addresses the underlying cause of disease, and allows the body to heal itself naturally. Physicians are taught to treat the cause not just the symptoms of an illness so that the body can function more efficiently and therefore ensuring true health.

Chiropractic Treatment of Neck Pain
Neck pain is extremely common and affects the quality of life of millions of people every day. Most of us have probably experienced an episode of neck pain at some point in our lives. There are several possible causes of neck pain - car accidents, poor posture, chronic tension and stress, the list goes on. Neck pain can also, in rare cases, be a sign of a more serious condition so be sure to have your symptoms evaluated by a doctor before attempting to manage the condition yourself. Many of the more common causes of neck pain can be addressed and treated with chiropractic care. The cervical spine - the bones in your neck - can arguably be considered the most significant part of the spine. Like the rest of the spine, it protects the spinal cord and the spinal nerves it receives. It also protects and houses a number of important vessels that bring nutritious blood to the brain. Of course the neck also has the important, and often difficult job, of supporting the weight of the head.

Our head weighs, on average, about 10 pounds. That's quite a load for the small bones in our neck to carry! The good news is that they receive quite a bit of help from all of the muscles, tendons, and ligaments in our neck. The bad news is that a lot of these structures deal with quite a bit of abuse, and can therefore contribute to some of the pain we may be feeling. Most of us are guilty of practicing imperfect posture. Not to mention that, regardless of our jobs, we tend to spend a large portion of our day hunched over some kind of electronic device or reading material. This forward-bent posture puts a significant amount of stress on the muscles in the back of our necks. As if that's not enough, many of us naturally tighten up our neck and shoulder muscles in times of stress. Needless to say, this can also, over time, cause irritation and pain in the neck region. These factors are some of the major causes of neck pain that we see in our office.

As mentioned previously, however, neck pain can also result from an injury. Whiplash is a very common type of injury that causes damage to the ligaments, joints, tendons and muscles of the neck. Whiplash doesn't necessarily have to be associated with just car accidents. It can also occur in sporting injuries such as football, or
