Oriental medicine (OM), also known as Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a healing art that existed in some form or other for more than 3,000 years. Some of the earlier texts date back from the Han Dynasty (206 BCE to 220 ACE). In the western world, it is commonly known as acupuncture. However, acupuncture is only one of several modalities that physicians of TCM use to treat patients. TCM emphasizes the role of the body in the healing process and uses herbs and natural agents to maintain health. It is an effective form of treatment and a particularly safe form of therapy. TCM is a complete medical system that takes into account every aspect of human life to promote health and well-being. It sees the body as one whole entity like a “Garden” and encompasses its physical, emotional, energetic, as well as its spiritual aspects. It emphasizes on the “Vis medicatrix” the “healing power of nature” better known as “the inborn ability of the human body to respond to the insult of illness or injury and restore itself to health in most episodes of disease or trauma (Whorton, 2002, p. 6).” The goal for treatment is boosting the ecological condition to favor self-regulatory capacity. Physicians in the eastern world are trained to examine skin, complexion, bones, channels, smells, sounds, mental state, preferences, emotions, tongue, pulse, demeanor, and body build to discern patterns that underlie a patient’s complaints. TCM’s wholistic approach to healing addresses the underlying cause of disease, and allows the body to heal itself naturally. Physicians are taught to treat the cause not just the symptoms of an illness so that the body can function more efficiently and therefore ensuring true health.

Spine health in growing children is absolutely essential and is often quite underrated or even ignored. As your child is growing, it is vital to facilitate proper joint motion and alignment. Research has shown that conditions like scoliosis can be improved or prevented from progressing through the use of chiropractic care. If your child's spine is not moving properly, it can predispose them to injury and the greater likelihood of having joint problems in adulthood.

Children typically respond very well and very quickly to chiropractic care. If a problem in the spine is detected, children often require just a few treatments to correct the joint fixation or misalignment. Thereafter, your doctor may recommend check ups to ensure that the spine is continuing to grow as it should be. More rigorous management may be required in children with an active diagnosis of scoliosis or children who are beginning to show signs of developing a curve. In these cases, your chiropractor may also recommend special home exercises to retrain your child's spine to adapt to the correct orientation.

However, chiropractic can do so much more for your child than just facilitate spinal alignment and joint motion. Studies have shown that chiropractic can not only help children with back and neck pain, but also with bed-wetting, ear infections, failure to thrive, and many other common childhood conditions. How does this work? Well, as you may already know, the spine surrounds and protects your spinal cord and the nerves exiting the spinal column. These nerves connect with all parts of your body and allow you to communicate with yourself and the environment - they allow you to feel, hear, see, touch, as well as allowing your heart to beat, your stomach to digest and your lungs to breath! And just about anything else you can think of! If the joints in our spines become stuck or irritated, as they often do through daily activities, they can irritate the nerves exiting our spines and interfere with our ability to perform all of the functions we just talked about. Manipulating the joints in the spine with an adjustment can help to free up the irritation to the spinal nerves and allow your body to function properly. This is why chiropractic care may offer some relief of a number of different conditions your child could be affected with.
